Towing Winch

Winch for towed sonar and towfish
  • 0.5–20 t series range — Electric or hydraulic, direct pull or traction, split or integrated, 100–12000 m of 6–22 mm coaxial cable.
  • Containerized heavy-duty variant — ≥17000 kg safe working load on a 20-ft container base, with local console, remote and portable remote control and a fresh-water flushing and grease lubrication unit.
  • High-speed variant to 15 knots — ≥7 t safe working load, 1690 m of 17.3 mm steel-wire-armored bare cable plus 440 m of 22 mm faired cable.
  • Protection built in — Power-loss braking, over-tension alarm with automatic pay-out, limit protection and fault alarm on the heavy-duty variant.

The Towing Winch is a deck towing winch for deploying, towing and recovering towfish and towed bodies to full ocean depth: side-scan sonar, combined sonar, synthetic aperture sonar, acoustic tow bodies, and shallow-, mid- and deep-tow instruments. It is offered together with the OCEAN PHYSICS side-scan and sub-bottom towfish.

The series is available with electric or hydraulic drive, in direct-pull or traction configuration, as a split or integrated unit. Cable capacity runs from 100 m to 12000 m of armored or non-metallic-armored coaxial cable, 6 mm to 22 mm diameter, with working load from 0.5 t to 20 t.

Two representative configurations extend the range. The heavy-duty towing winch, built on a 20-ft container base for fast deck mounting, is intended for heavy tow bodies, trawls, TV grabs and seabed drills: ≥17000 kg safe working load, ≥3300 m of Φ30 mm armored opto-electric composite cable, and an integrated traction unit, cable storage, independent level wind, tension slack compensation, dual opto-electric slip rings and a cable flushing and lubrication module. The high-speed towing winch tows custom tow bodies at up to 15 knots, with ≥7 t safe working load. Both are designed and supplied by OCEAN PHYSICS.
